My Home, in Libya
First screened in November 2018
Director: Martina Melilli. Documentary about the filmmaker's research into her Italian grandparents' childhood upbringing in Libya and her deepening relationship with the Libyan stranger who is aiding her research at a very challenging time.
On-screen text and other tricks feel rote at first but the encounter between Martina and Mahmoud keeps deepening.
Neither form nor substance departs completely from how similar subjects have been handled elsewhere, but nor are they retreads. Moving and important.
